I haven't been able to post any blogs for a little while... planning our family trip. Well, it will be a long journey driving from our home in Lincoln to see my mum, who lives in Hungary. Of course, we will drop by the dentist, as well, whilst in Hungary for check-up and a long-dreaded scale removal... I have to have it done every year. Somehow my lower teeth develop very strong scale, making the teeth go black, brown and yellow. The dentist says I drink way too much coffee and tea, but I don't think I drink more than the average. Anyway, I like keeping my teeth nice and white, so maintenance is the key.

Flicking through the news today, I came across this headline "Tulisa Contostavlos 'gets £12k teeth makeover' ahead of X Factor launch" http://www.metro.co.uk/tv/872050-tulisa-contostavlos-gets-12k-teeth-makeover-ahead-of-x-factor-launch . - Oh, it's X Factor time again! I remember some really horrid teeth on the show before. Actually, the way they make fun out of these wannabes makes me feel sorry for them. Not everybody can afford a £12k smile makeover and have pearly whites, like Tulsia, or have the famous "Simon Cowell effect".

But I agree, if you want to be in the public eye, you do need to invest into your smile.

This week has been so busy, I never managed to make the time for a blog. But now I will write you a quick one!!!
It is hot in Lincoln, 29C today, a mini heatwave. Mini because by the time you get your barbecue out and polished the heatwave will be gone...
Spending a lovely lunch with my husband, watching TV he wanted to show me the latest Top Gear, when they "visited" Lincoln, our town. For all of you, who wouldn't know what Top Gear (http://www.topgear.com/uk/) is, well a car program with three main guys in it, Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson. Whenever I watched the show I did it because of the presenters. Great guys with lots of personality. However, I just wasn't in the mood this time. Regardless, my hubby was not letting it go and because I came across this part so many times on Twitter, I decided to go along with it. Oh, well it was about some electric car and how much of a useless piece of metal it is, but dear lord, Jeremy Clarkson needs to schedule an appointment with his dentist!!! His teeth are so so yellow! I mean, it is not like he hasn't got the money to see the dentist for regular maintenance.... anyway, I googled his name and yellow teeth and a lot more article came up....
So, as much as I love Jeremy and I find his grumpy comments seriously entertaining I have to say, please have your teeth whitened or sorted out and don't be afraid the pain. But great teeth will make you look even more attractive!

Celeb Wannabes

Oh this week went so quick. I can clearly remember Monday morning, feeling this week will never pass and there you go several dental blogs later it is Friday!

So, let's see how I spent this week. Mostly sorting out write ups, dental blogs, social media and dental research. Other than that watching TV and oh, yes... last night I went to a fabulous open air theatre in beautiful Stamford, with my friend Julie.

The play was very entertaining and I really enjoyed myself. However, I couldn't help but notice one of the actress's teeth... Gosh! She was such a pretty girl, great figure and charisma, but big front teeth, so huge they were causing a speech problem, making me wonder how she got this acting opportunity in the first place... There is solution out there and her acting carrier surely deserves this investment.

Also, when watching Celeb Wannabe programmes like X-Factor, especially the auditions, sometimes I feel I could scream. Honestly, how anybody with rotten teeth can think there is a chance to break into the Entertainment Industry??? We had several patients, who had their teeth fixed before the X-Factor auditions and although only one of them made it to the Boot Camp (not sure about the singing ability) they were all very happy with their new teeth, the dental treatments they received and the savings they made by choosing our low cost dental options.

Loss and Teeth

Hello from still grim Lincoln (UK)...

There is some very disturbing road works going on in-front of our den and it doesn't help lightening my mood. Also, last weekend's happenings are still settling in my head, trying to make sense.

The Oslo killings, our solders dying in Afghanistan and Amy Winehouse, of course. Oh, how I loved her voice, but how I resisted witnessing her way to total self-destruction! What a waste! RIP Amy!

However, following the dental profession so closely, I simply could not help but research the connection between using drugs and long-term teeth damage, remembering we have had quite few patients, recovered from drug abuse and going through major make-overs, starting with sorting out their teeth.

The be honest, those case studies shocked me the most. Once we plastered our exhibition stand with giant before and after photos of dental patients... without a doubt those photos attracted the most attention, some visitors stating it was simply scary ....

Yes, but some people are having to live with this, because they can't afford major smile makeovers after recovering from drug abuse.

This is one of the main reasons, I like my job! Our dental surgeries in Hungary and in London are so low priced, offering several solutions, these people can afford the prices and start it fresh.

What is it with Jennifer Aniston's teeth

Happy Mondays! I say that because I know how many of you just hate Mondays... we all need cheering up when the weather is grim... I normally don't like Mondays either, no matter the weather, really. If it's nice, then oh such a waste, because I can't enjoy it, if it's grey then my mood is low... Are you a Monday person?

Anyway, I also don't like Mondays, because it feels a bit like "holiday blues", but instead of a 2 weeks all-in Caribbean treat, I only had two days! Oh, never mind, stop the moaning!

I spent Saturday and Sunday evening watching a movie. Oh, yes, I am getting old I guess, because now it takes me 2 nights to go through only one film! Is that weird? It was a family choice to watch "Just go with it", based on the classic 1969 film Cactus Flower. Had such a bad reception in the UK... I loved it. Not a fan of Jennifer Aniston, though but she was great in it. True acting came through and strong character forming. However, I couldn't help but noticing conversations on her "teeth being done"... yes, she has lovely teeth. And this morning reading entertainment news (like if I was getting paid for it...) only to read in the Daily Star

"JENNIFER ANISTON'S JOY AT PLAYING A KINKY DENTIST".

Hey, I thought, she is getting involved in the dental profession so deeply, she could be the face of "Oral Health"... that made me smile.... My Monday morning is brighter already! OK, she is playing a sexually aggressive dentist, so maybe she wouldn't be the best to represent this rather conservative trade... :)

She also revealed in an interview that her dentist is real life plays the guitar for her whilst she is having mould in her mouth, not leaving her a choice but to listen to it.... That's what I call customer service....

However, I have to admit our dentists don't play the guitar, but they will put you in the ease anyway and your wallet won't be too hurt either, no matter if you wish to have the treatments done in London or in Hungary, savings will give you a reason to be chuffed about! Happy Mondays!

Hey, this is Friday and it is a very bright, sunny morning, here in Lincolnshire. As usual I was reading through today's news and came across this piece on how Nia Vardalos is longing for Julia Roberts's smile. Wow, i thought, that's nice, but who is Nia Vardalos? Recently I am so busy, no time catching up with the latest music and movies... And then I got to the bit where they mentioned Nia's films... "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". I am sure most of you seen the movie....if not I highly recommend it.

Anyway, the article was more of a promotional one for some kind of "no dentist needed" plague removal lozenge. To me it just proved it again, no matter your financial nor your social status, achieving an attractive and healthy smile should be on everybody's priority list.

Who would think having excessive dental work done at age 81 could be anybody's birthday wish? We had a patient, not so long ago, who just completed his very complex dental work in Hungary. He said, spending all these years without the joy of being able to chew a decent steak was a waste of time and now he is glad however much time he has ahead of him to live every day with fully functional teeth and an attractive smile.

Treat Yourself a little by a cosmopolitan dental break... Oh, Yes!

Today, we had torrential rain in the centre of Lincoln. So bad our office was flooded in no time, well literally in about 2 minutes, but it took us a good hour to dry it all up... After this experience, I decided a coffee break was in order and some harmless surfing on the Internet.... Sure, I was looking for a nice, hot destination not so far away (long-haul flights tire me out so much I need another holiday usually). Actually, I was thinking of more like a city break in Madrid or Alicante... yes, till my filling came out and landed in my coffee.... Oh, yes, I have been putting off my visit to the dentist (changing amalgam filling and update my dental crowns). Funny, I have been working in the field of dental tourism and even I put off my visits....

Anyway, I done some research. In Budapest (Hungary) it is 31C at the moment, sunny and hot, hot, hot and knowing Budapest it is quite cosmopolitan in some areas, so my short break was sorted.

However, going to the dentist just can not be a relaxing experience... oh, I need some bubbly- decided and booked my flight to see our dentist, located in the most fashionable area, right in the swanky heart of down-town Budapest, so some retail therapy will be in order before and after my appointment.

By the way the dentist is very charismatic, a real Mediterranean gent so I know my visit will be as stress-free as possible. Just to indulge a bit I am staying at the Four Seasons (Gresham Palace), only about 10 minutes walk away from the surgery. But you can find hotels and B&Bs a lot closer and a lot cheaper. The surgery's location is simply the best you can possibly get, when searching for dentist in Budapest.

Anyway, I am all booked. And will post you the before and after photos, so you can judge the result yourself.

Oh, by the way, a photo of my bedroom, I can't wait.

I see teeth everywhere

Oh, I spent the past week moaning about the British weather as I had to go out on meetings quite a lot. Getting the rain in your neck is never a pleasant experience. But getting out and about sometimes makes you see things in a different light. Call it a work related obsession, but I was looking at passer-bys teeth a lot. They smile, talk and eat... and most of them seem to be happy with their teeth, false dentures, yellow stains and missing fronts....

But according to a survey published in Mail on Sunday "Three quarters of British women so camera shy they avoid having picture taken" and some of the main anxieties include having their eyes closed, embarrassment about their outfit, having discoloured or wonky teeth and ‘smile lines’. The Mail claims "Despite women’s hang-ups, a smile is the first thing men are attracted to in a woman – ahead of cleavage or legs.

Interestingly, 28 per cent of men actually said they found ‘smile lines’ attractive.

TV presenter Holly Willoughby’s smile was most popular for men, followed by Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry and Fearne Cotton."

There is a quickly developing trend to "get smiles fixed", because most of the population actually can afford some sort of dental solution, but till this time, just could not care.

On my way to a meeting I decided to have lunch in one of the popular bistros on Lincoln (UK) High Street. I just love how older ladies dress up and take their friends out for posh lunches... They look like a million dollar, but the biggest shock to me was their teeth. Gosh! You could tell, they could afford the dentist, they just do not have the aesthetic urge to do so.... Sorry, ladies, it is a no go for me, but enjoy your lunch, that is if you can bite into that steak properly....

The connection between conceiving and bad teeth

I just came across an article published in the Telegraph, analysing the connection between the likelihood of conceiving and bad teeth. I have to admit articles like this are not always realistic, but this time it made sense. Sometimes you read about things, like how poor oral health and neglected teeth can give you heart attack, and rheumatoid arthritis, but I never heard of the baby connection.

If any of you had any experience that could support this or actually any evidence against this, please comment below.

Keeping your teeth and gum healthy is a continuous process and sometimes you might feel, " oh, I can't be bothered tonight with the brushing, I'll do it tomorrow"- but the article suggest this could lead to problems... Regular trips to your dentists, are also recommended and if you have amalgam fillings, it's better not taking the risk and just get them changed.

We have now started running "Case of the Month" articles, when we describe one of the most common dental problems through one of our recent patient's case. Mr Kaye contacted us in February and went to one of our consultations to London. He is a strong smoker. Most people are now aware that smoking is bad for our health. It can cause many different medical problems and, in some cases, fatal diseases. However, many people don’t realise the damage that smoking does to their mouth, gums and teeth. Smoking can lead to tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss and in more severe cases mouth cancer. One of the effects of smoking is staining on the teeth due to the nicotine and tar content. It can make the teeth yellow in a very short time, and heavy smokers often complain that their teeth are almost brown after years of smoking.

Mr Kaye says: "The difference is huge. I though I was taking a risk by going to Hungary for dental treatment, but the only risk I had been taking is living with those horrible teeth... I was always conscious of them, but now I am proud of my smile.... Hungarian Dental Travel, best known as the “flying dentists” after touring the UK in a bespoke inflatable dental surgery - announced on the 2nd of February 2010 a new dental partner on their panel.

The Hungarian Dental Travel team has been sending dental patients to Hungary successfully for over 5 years. The “inflatable project” hit the headlines in 2008. Their long term dental partner in Budapest is a high technology clinic, focusing on treating dental problems as part of a holistic healing aspect

-“There are so many choices out there for patients, as the overseas market has become very competitive in the last few years. We would like them to recognise that Hungarian Dental Travel has developed an underlying infrastructure to safeguard patients best interests”- says Mr Hall.

Firstly, I would like to wish all of our patients and professional colleagues a happy new year!

I spent alot of my spare time in December getting ready for what I think will be a spectacular 2010. My office got a good clean out and stacks of paper got shredded in the process. All in all I am refreshed and ready to give it my all this new year.

Dentists

Dr Csillag will continue to be our Dentist in Budapest this year. He kicks off the year with a new state of the art dental surgery in the green hilly Buda side of the capital city.

We are hoping to work with a new dental clinic in Gyor, Hungary later this month. We have known about this clinic for well over five years now and they have a great reputation. As ever, our patients will only be seen by one dentist in that clinic. I cannot do any name dropping just yet but he has well over 25 years experience as a dentist, is very ethical and speaks perfect english.

More UK Consultations

We are committed this year to organising more dental consultation in London so that patients can see the dentist before they travel to Hungary for treatment.

We will have two clinics that we will be using. One in Hampstead and the other one in the west end near the the British Museum.

Treatment in London.

Over the years we have had to turn away many patients who need one or two implants and still want to save money. Usually, whatever they save on treatment is normally taken away in travel and accommodation costs which is why travelling to Hungary is normally only suitable for patients requiring major treatment.

This year we will be developing a service whereby patients will be able to have treatment in the UK as well as in Hungary. The price of treatment here in the UK will be just a fraction more than in Hungary but still loads cheaper than treatment in the UK.

Dental Implant Extended Warranty

We have also been given the green light to offer a dental implant extended warranty. Whilst we have an incredibly high track success rate, patients can still lose an implant through accidental damage.

Electricity and Water – A lethal combination!

For well over five years now, I have been helping dental patients from all over the world travel to Hungary for quality dental care. Surprisingly I have not been at all motivated by the “bottom line” whilst working in the health tourism market, instead trying to offer the best service I can. I have a firm belief that healthcare and money is like mixing electricity and water. It is lethal!

The attraction of lower prices - Expectations are still high!

Dental patients only travel to Hungary because dental treatment is far less expensive but fear also accompanies that dream of a perfect smile for less! It is difficult to trust another countries healthcare system and so patients start to have higher expectations of what they want from an overseas dental service. In many cases a higher expectation than what they would get if they paid double bubble at home.

Working with the best – It works!

I am not a dentist by profession but I have always had the knack of choosing the right dentists to work with. I have always known what I am looking for and the last five years has been testimony to my success in this area. We do not shout about it enough but patients do not usually realise that I choose which dentists to work with and not the other way around. This means that I work in the best interests of the patient and not the dentist. Surely a good thing!

Applying the brakes – Just as important as starting!

Recently I ended what was a great three year partnership with one of our dentists from the North West region of Hungary. A great dentist and a great guy! Whilst I have every respect for him, we both started to go in different directions.

The experience triggered a deep thought process which made me think about some of the dentists that I had worked with in the past and why we stopped working with them.

All good things come to an end but it was more than a year ago now that one dentist springs to mind. The great thing is that we realised very early that the dentist was going off the rails and weacted swiftly before any damage was done. This can happen and does happen to dentists in the UK and it is those that are close to the dentist that recognise problems first.

The Dentist that lost it – Anonymous for legal reasons

After a year of vetting, I started working with what was a bright, young dentist with a vision for excellence. He had recently built a “state of the art” dental surgery in Budapest and had formed an alliance with the most prestigious dental laboratories in the city.
I noticed that he was a bit wacky but everything went well for a year or so until his father died. The dentist god bless him totally lost the plot. His father had been a financial guarantor on the business which meant that the banks instantly pulled the plug on the business overdraft and called in all of the loans on the business. I am not sure how much it was but I was told that the clinic cost a cool €500,000.

Complaints also started to pour in from patients over sub standard treatment....They were minor issues but he dealt with the criticism equally as bad by threatening to do horrible things to these complaining patients. Needless to say I never passed on his comments and although not legally obliged, I took care of the complaints at my expense.. It is also alleged that he attacked his dental technician with a hammer. This was actually an early warning sign for me that the dentist was losing control. I did receive this information from both the dentist and the technician involved although the severity was reported differently.

It got to a point whereby I could not support him any more because in my opinion, patients were potentially at risk. Sadly, I officially withdrew my support which was received with anger and I was left with little choice but to report him to the General Dental Council, London as he was also registered here in Britain.

Unfortunately, the General Dental Council would only take further action if I did all the leg work at my expense which would have turned into a full time job for two people lasting several months. I just did not have the resources.

The dentist continues to treat patients although not mine!
His sister contested the will which means that even today he cannot get his hands on his fathers money!
This dentist is still in financial distress which could lead to issues over quality of materials and overcharging.

Final Thought – This is what I was leading up to!

The General Dental Council did give me some credit. They did point out that they rely on the people close to a dentist to identify potential problems as they arise and report it. It was then that I realised that my job as an intermediary has a very important value to patients and what is good today might not be good tomorrow.

Be rest assured that whoever I work with is the best and that I constantly monitor performance because patient well being comes first before anything.

Getting The Best Value For Your Money When Travelling To Hungary For Dental Treatment

If you are considering having a substantial amount of private dental treatment here in the UK then it will no doubt cost you a pricely sum.

There are many people who are more than prepared to pay the price here in the United Kingdom, however the trend of travelling overseas for treatment has become more and more polular over the last few years. Why? Well because it is far less expensive than in the United Kingdom especially if you require major treatment. I have dealt with patients who have saved anywhere from £7000 to £17000 compared to prices at home. Even for the wealthy this is a substantial amount of money especially when the quality is just as good. The downside is that patients can become price conscious and choose a company that just cannot cut the mustard!

Here are a few hints and tips to get the most out of your dental trip to Hungary.

According to the General Dental Council in London the average price of a dental implant is £1,960 here in the UK as opposed to around £700 in Hungary.

COMPETITION

When I started helping patients travel to Hungary for dental treatment over 5 years ago my competitors could be counted on one hand. In the last few years every man and his dog has been jumping on the bandwagon thinking that a fast buck can be made out of the British.

Nowadays, there are literally hundreds of Dentists to choose in Hungary so how do you seperate the men from the boys and find the best value for money for your hard earned cash.

Dental Implants

A mid range dental implant with Hungarian Dental Travel is around £700 on average and our dentists work with several different well known brands. So, how does a competitor offer the same branded implant for £150 to £200 less? There could be several reasons:

1) FACT - Some clinics in Hungary advertise dental implants for £550 or less just to reel you in and then charge an extra £150 to £200 for the abutment. There is no real reason why the price should be split down like this because the dental implant and the abutment come from the manufacturer as a matched pair.

2) FACT - The implants may be advertised for less but they know that at some point a crown, bridge or denture will be attached at some point. A strategy of charging less for the dental implants and more for the crowns and bridgework will hopefully reel you in byhoping that you will judge them on first appearances only.

3) FACT - You may be charged extra for uncovering the implant after the healing period.

4) FACT - There are many dental clinics in Hungary who are much more financially orientated than the rest of us. These clinics employ dentists who have recently graduated and will not even entertain the idea of employing an experienced dentist. Recently graduated dentists work for less money but the quality is only what you would expect from a dentist with limited experience.

5) FACT - The same clinics either employ inexperienced dental technicians on the cheap or they will send their prosthetic work to a lab that will intentionally cut corners and use cheap materials. This allows costs to be cut further. Same goes for dental technicians. If the dental clinic sends the work to a dental laboratory who will cut corners and use cheaper materials then costs can be slashed even further.

6) FACT - Watch out for the hidden charges. Dentists are generally good at blinding you with science.

FINAL THOUGHT

Don't get me wrong...Hungary is the best place in Europe to go for high quality inexpensive dental treatment and there is no law to say that a clinic must price products and services in a particular way.
Those clinics that price the two pieces of a dental implant seperately are not necessarily cheating you. I just do not see the point as an implant is useless without it's abutment.

It has taken several years for Hungary to grow as a reputable destination for dental care and I have had to think long and hard about whether to blow the whistle.

There is an old saying that if you cannot beat them, join them - Not in this case!
